Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People using these treatments need to be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have discontinued the medication explain a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.

This challenge is compounded if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
