European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says
The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
